Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve Wetland Mitigation Bank

Location: Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve north of Lake Cook Rd.

Description: The Lake County Forest Preserve is currently expanding and improving the Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve. As part of the work being done at this preserve, the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) constructed a wetland mitigation bank by returning former farm fields to a sustainable natural condition. More than 25 acres of wetlands have been created, and a new section of path added that will be part of Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve’s path system. Establishing a wetland mitigation bank will help offset future impacts to wetlands that may happen as part of construction projects.

The improvement includes the creation of a wetland mitigation bank within the Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve. The work includes earth excavation, storm sewer, wetland plants and seeding and the construction of an aggregate trail.
